Jake's 4th

We helped Jake O'Leary celebrate his 4th birthday today, at Playtown Express.  Talk about an energy burn!  Lots of kids, lots of pizza, lots of cake - and it looked like Jake got lots of presents.  Although Syl didn't know a lot of of the kids, Madeline of course made sure she felt included.

Syl especially loved the BIG slide (of course).

All in a winter's Daddy Day

Occasionally when Sylvie's mom has some errands and other stuff to do on the weekends, Syl and I get enough concentrated together time for the day to be deemed a "Daddy Day."  Today was such a day, as Melissa headed hit the stores to start our upstairs rearranging project (more on that later).

For anyone who hasn't been watching the news: we have a lot of snow here in the Greater Boston Area.  A lot lot.  It keeps coming, storm after storm and unlike in most years there has been no warm weather in between.  It just keeps piling up.  The town has had to deploy bulldozers to get snow away from the roads - otherwise there is no place to put the next batch.  We easily have over three feet on the ground in open areas - and the snow banks are mountains.

So the first thing Sylvie and I did on this beautiful winter Saturday was head out to the driveway.  I thought I'd lift Sylvie to the top of one of the banks, but she had more ambitious ideas.  In keeping with her "all by myself" theme of late, she started at the bottom and worked her own way to the summit.  It was an impressive climb by any standard.

After the climb, Syl declared her desire to go sledding.  Brendan had told us that there is an excellent, huge hill on the grounds of the abandoned Medfield State Mental Hospital near by (sounds like the premise of a bad movie, but the grounds are quite bucolic).

Boy, was he right.  The hill puts Oak Grove to shame.  Per usual, Sylvie showed no fear whatsoever - demanding after the first run that we go again - "backwards" - and eventually deciding she was ready to go solo.  That drew an audience, with more than a few parents expressing the sort of misgivings that I suppose I should have felt. If I have learned one thing about Sylvie and sledding this winter, though, it is that the kid is TOUGH.  With the soft, deep snow, a wide open run and the inflatable sled, I figured the chances of a catastrophic crash were pretty slim.  So I didn't think all that much about shoving Sylvie off on her first solo run.

I was right, by the way - the closest Syl came to mishap involved a gaggle of oblivious teenagers.  My yelling snapped them to attention just in time to avoid a collision.

After lunch, Sylvie and I repaired to Buddabing's Diner, one of our favorite eateries, where I enjoyed breakfast for lunch and Syl had - surprise! - a grilled cheese sandwich.  She impressed her dad by ordering her whole lunch without any prompting:

Syl: "Is you got lemonade?"
Waitress:  "We do have lemonade."
Syl: "I have lemonade... please.  And is you got mac n cheese?"
Waitress: Unfortunately we don't!"
Syl, with rumpled brow: "Okay... is you got grilled cheese sammich?"
Waitress: "We do!"
Syl: "I want grilled cheese sammich.  Please."

She was pretty pleased with herself.  I was pretty pleased with her very deliberate use of "please."

Sixty years!!

Sylvie's Great Grandma and Great Grandpa Halasz celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this weekend!  This photo of the happy couple is cribbed from Melissa's Uncle David's Facebook page...

 1951... In addition to the Halasz nuptials, here are a few other things that happened that year:

The first color television images were broadcast (as a test only);

The average family income in the USA was $3700 (a gallon of gas cost $0.19);

President Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur;

The term "Rock and Roll" was coined by Alan Freed, a Cleveland disc jockey;

and, of course, the first nuclear bomb was tested in Nevada.

Syl is sorry we could not be there in Cleveland this weekend to help celebrate.  She and her folks send our love and admiration.

Happy Anniversary, Grandma & Grandpa Halasz!

Another day, another sledding excursion

This time with the O'Learys.  Brendan and I took the kids to Oak Grove for some morning sledding.  The ladies demurred - what with the 20 degree temps and all.  The kids did not mind the cold at all (aside from Sylvie's pair of face plants - she wasn't too pleased with those).

Keeps your ears out for Madeline's repeated endorsement of milk.  She denies taking payment from the Dairy Council, but I am unconvinced.

After lunch the moms joined us for lunch at the Eaglebrook Saloon.  A good winter Saturday, all things considered (especially since yesterday I strongly suspected that the stomach flu that has been stalking our area had finally caught me).

Taking sledding to the next level

On Sunday morning, Sydney and Alex decided to show Sylvie the local sledding hill.  It is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger and steeper than Sylvie's usual run.  Unsurprisingly she rose to the challenge.  Repeated tumbles, snow in the face, the long slog back up the hill at the end of every run - nothing could deter her.  Alex held his own too. Sydney, however, soon retreated to the safety and warmth of the car to wait out the other kids.

 After the sledding, the kids were rewarded for their efforts with a chocolate frosted donut each.  Good deal.

Sydney's Princess Party!

Sydney Liggett celebrated her third this Saturday with a magical princess party.  Sylvie was very pleased at the excuse to don her Cinderella costume and join in.  Besides celebrating in true princess fashion - princess cake, princess dance party, princess crafts - Sylvie also discovered an affinity for air hockey.

Just keeps getting better

What could be better after a play-intensive snow day than life's first taste of hot chocolate?

SNOW DAY (and close call)

Another week another blizzard here in the Greater Boston Area.  Sylvie and Dad both have snow days today, so we headed out for an abbreviated bit of play in the deep, deep snow.  Abbreviated for reasons explained below...

Lots of Snow

Pax has always been a snow dog

"I want to climb that mountain."

Because it was there.

Before the fall

Sharp eyes will catch the reason for our retreat to the indoors in these two photos.  Same snowbank, photos snapped about 10 second apart.  In the intervening seconds a big old hemlock came down not 20 feet behind Syl.  Not a huge tree, but big enough.  She thought it was pretty cool.  I thought it was a suggestion from above that maybe we should push up our hot chocolate appointment.
