Considering that I spent the bulk of it sitting at my desk writing a memo, it is quite a testament to my girls that I had an excellent 39th birthday yesterday.
I got home at my usual time - close to 8:00 - to find a very excited little one waiting eagerly for a promised "treat." When I suggested we head upstairs for a bath, she was furious. "But - but - but DAAAAAD! Mommy said when you got home we gonna have birthday cake!" Thus was the cat let out of the bag. Since Syl was already past her bedtime, we busted out the (ice cream - Oreo!) cake and let Sylvie have her portion, which she devoured messily. I opened some great presents, and then we headed upstairs.
After the munchkin was in bed, Melissa served me an awesome steak birthday dinner - an even rarer treat than it used to be, given her meat-eschewing ways.
The best part? During our usual pre-bed cuddle Syl gave me an extra squeeze and asked if I had a good birthday. Then she added, "I love you Dad. You're a great dad." Doesn't get better than that.
Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes. Now I embark upon my 40th year...
